Profile

Weidong Chen received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Control Engineering in 1990 and 1993, and Ph.D. degree in Mechatronics in 1996, respectively, all from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China. Since 1996, he has been at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University where he is currently Professor of the Department of Automation, and Deputy Dean of the Medical Robotics Institute. He is the founder of the Autonomous Robot Laboratory. From August 2003 to February 2004, he was a visiting associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The Ohio State University. In July and August 2012, he was a visiting professor in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. He is a visiting professor in the Brain Science Life Support Research Center at the University of Electro-Communications in Japan from April 2016 to March 2021.

Dr. Chen’s current research interests include mobile robot, multi-robot systems, mobile manipulator, and medical robotics. His research has been supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), National Key R&D Program, National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program) and ITER Program from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Ministry of Education (MOE), etc. Dr. Chen has served on numerous programs and organizing committees of international conferences. Most recently, he was a General Co-Chair of the 27th IEEE International Conference on Robot and Human Interactive Communication (RO-MAN 2018), Nanjing and Tai'an, China, August 27-31, 2018, and served as the General Chair of the 14th International Conference on Intelligent Autonomous Systems (IAS-14), Shanghai, China, July 3-7, 2016.

Dr. Chen is a winner of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award presented by the Shanghai Municipal Government in 2008, a winner of First Class Award for Excellent Teaching of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2015 and 2017, a winner of Best Paper Award of 2015 International Conference on Wearable Sensor and Robot (ICWSR 2015), a winner of Best Oral Presentation Award of 2013 International Conference on Intelligent Robotics and Applications (ICIRA 2013), a winner of KUKA Service Robotics Best Paper Award of the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in 2011, a winner of the Teaching Achievement Award presented by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission in 2004 and 2017. He has also been recognized by the 2007 New Century Excellent Talents of Ministry of Education of China, and a 2004 Shanghai Shuguang Scholar. He is a co-founder of the JiaoLong RoboCup Team. JiaoLong RoboCup Team has won more than 10 national championships in Soccer Middle Size League and RoboCup@home League in the past annual China Robot Competitions & China RoboCup Open since 2005.
