Profile

Dr. Yakun Yuan received his bachelor’s degree at Peking University in 2013, majoring in physics and dual major in applied mathematics. He received PhD degree in materials science and engineering at the Pennsylvania State University in 2018. After which, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at University of California, Los Angeles and Lawrence-Berkeley National Lab until 2021. His research interests focus on developing advanced characterization methods by combining principles in computational imaging with the state-of-the-art optical, X-ray and electron techniques, as well as its application in materials research. In 2021, he joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University as assocaite professor. Dr. Yuan has published over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles, including Nature, Nature Materials, Nature Communications etc. He was selected in the National Excellent Youth Program (Overseas) and MIT Technology Review '35 Innovators under 35' China.

Research Group

Name of Research Group:Advanced Electro-Magnetic Characteriz...

Description of Research Group:The understanding of structural and property relationship in functional materials is often limited by the static and spatially-averaged characterization methods. Probing materials in 4D space-time dimensions with high precision is the foundation to modern materials research. The recent advances in ultrafast optics, aberration-correction electron beam and synchrotron X-ray techniques provide new opportunities in developing the next-generation materials characterization methods. By combining computational imaging with advanced electromagnetic probes, this project aims at developing high-precision, low-dosage, light-element sensitive characterization methods, as well as focusing on solving long-standing problems in functional materials.
